As Apple app store claims that they have got an app for everything, it seems quote justified when we take a brief look at their app store which has now got more than 200,000 apps in it, an app for every reason. From their huge collection, I have spotted five free medical apps that could come in handy. Lets take a quick look:
1) Medscape
This app has a great drug reference section, with over 6,000 generic, brand, and OTC drugs, along with a drug interaction checker. With the recent updates, Medscape now has introduced a Diseases and Conditions section, along with a Clinical Procedures section. These added sections contain accurate and useful information aided by videos and pictures. In short, its a great freebie for those who prefer to look up for first aid stuff on web, now they can have all of it in their pocket.
2) Epocrates
The free version, called Epocrates Rx, includes: Drug interactions, Pill Identifier, Drug Info, and Medical Calculator. Our previously discussed app – Medscape doesn’t have a medical calculator unlike this app, which could be very useful sometimes. This is a must have app for every medical professional.
3) iRadiology
This app is a must download if you’re a medical student. Even if you’re not one, you might be interested in downloading it just for fun. This app has got a catalog of over 500 radiology cases designed to help medical students and residents to improve their plain film, CT, and MRI reading skills. The cases are derived from Dr. Gillian Lieberman, who is currently the Director of Harvard Medical Student training and Associate Director of the Residency Program at Beth Israel Medical Center. This useful app is free of cost too and can be download from Apple app store.
4) MedPage Today Mobile
MedPage Today mobile app is actually an app version of this website which contains a lot of useful tips and medical related stuff. The website is a fantastic resource for medical professionals, and a lot of the content is in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine – further securing its academic credentials. Their motto is, “Putting Breaking Medical News Into Practice”, and this app helps you all that content with ease from your iPhone. In addition, you can get audio and video through this app, allowing you to get CME credits while using MedPage Today mobile.
5) Medical Radio
This is a product of ReachMD, probably most famous for its XM Satellite Radio broadcast feeds (XM 160) of medical information – and these feeds are available live through this app. This app allows you to keep up to date with changing clinical guidelines, quite informative and useful app for medical students.
