American President, Senator Barrack Obama has recently said that he does not know how to work with the modern devices of this age, like iPhone, iPad or even some gaming consoles like Xbox 360 and PS3. During his speech at Hampton University which was delivered on last Sunday, he said that these devices of next generation are not empowering the youth, but instead they have produced a great source of distraction for them. “With iPods and iPads and Xboxes and PlayStations–none of which I know how to work–information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation,” he told his audience During his speech, he also said that several students in the Hall might be tweeting his words right now on the web and that is just one example of how fast the information travels on the web. He clearly seemed to be concerned with the quality and tenor of information which is being produced on the web. “You’re coming of age in a 24/7 media environment that bombards us with all kinds of content and exposes us to all kinds of arguments, some of which don’t always rank all that high on the truth meter,” he reportedly said. The concern, he added, is that such a proliferation of dubious information is “putting new pressures on our country and our democracy.” He also said that it depends upon the very user of the device on how he or she wants to use it. It could be for both – positive and negative purposes. It helps them to be more informative of their surroundings, or could be a useful tool for creating a panic or hysteria among public with some faulty information. The president invoked Thomas Jefferson in his speech, specifically the notion that democracy can only work if “each of us stayed informed and engaged, if we held our government accountable, if we fulfilled the obligations of citizenship.”
