According to StatCounter’s GlobalStats report, Twitter is currently generating more than 10% of social media oriented traffic to websites, in terms of websites and applications, while Facebook is still dominating the race as the major source of traffic to social networking websites with around 48% traffic share among the selected websites. The second on the list is Stumbleupon, which managed to attract more than 25% of the total Social Media traffic. Twitter, on the other end failed to impress with its stat and has fallen down in ranking. Furthermore, StatCounter reports that last month, StumbleUpon was number one in terms of traffic generation, which means that the company generated more traffic than the facebook. The data for March 2010 is said to be based on 13 billion page views across the global StatCounter network of member sites. The top Social Media sites to generate global website traffic after Facebook, StumbleUpon and Twitter are:
- YouTube (6%)
- reddit (4%)
- Digg (2%)
- MySpace (2%)
LinkedIn was ranked at 12 out of 25 monitored services with 0.34%, while Google Buzz was not yet included in the research. Here’s the graphical representation of the data:
As stumbleupon could be the potential competitor of facebook in terms of driving traffic ( has been better than facebook over the period of March 2009 to July 2009 as shown in the graph), the chances are very slim that it will retain the crown in near future. The gap between them and facebook has already crossed the potential threshold and it doesn’t seem to be shrinking in the future. So whats the final verdict? Well thats pretty much clear and its the fact than facebook now practically “owns” the social media, and with the recent developments regarding the Open Social Media tools, the probability of its dominance in future can’t be doubted. If your company deals with any of the social media that is present in the list and you’re interested in raising the graph of your company, then we at 1SocialMedia could help you create an application just for that purpose.
