Apple has continued to release the beta version of its much anticipated firmware – iPhone OS 4.0. This firmware is expected to release in the month of June, 2010 at World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) which is organized by Apple every year. So far, Apple has released three beta versions of its upcoming firmware for developers. In order to download, you need to visit the Apple developer center online and register for a developer account. You can then download your desired version of beta firmware later. There are no registration or downloading charges. In the previous versions, Apple has significantly improved and tweaked many features for the iPhone, some are visible and some are under the hood. Lets take a look at what this new beta version of firmware has got to offer.
Support for Landscape Orientation in Photos App
You can now browse your pictures on iPhone in portrait, as well as the new landscape mode. This feature was not previously available in iPhone, and photo browsing was only possible in portrait mode.
Utilities Folder
The new firmware supports the option of managing your apps in a folder. So for instance, if you have lot of puzzle games installed on your iPhone, you can create a separate folder for them named “Puzzle Games” and put all your collection over there. This would greatly help in managing those apps and saving space on your homescreen. This version of iPhone provides this feature by default for utilities, which means that all the utilities like calculator and weather app which were previously on the dashboard of iPhone would now be accessible via a folder.
New Set of Wallpapers
There has been a whole new set of wallpapers for iPhone which is quite attractive. These wallpapers could also be set as the background for iPhone’s homescreen.
Native Internet Tethering
Previously, Internet tethering was available only for jailbroken iPhone via certain apps and utilities from Cydia. Then it was introduced by Apple as an option, and now it has been embedded in the latest firmware. So if you can’t find a hotspot for your iPhone, you can easily connect it to the internet via a USB port by enabling tethering.
Custom Dictionary
Another utility which has been introduced by Apple is the free dictionary. Comes very handy in everyday life to look up the usual without hooking up to the internet. Thats pretty much of it. Hopefully more features would be announced when the final version of this firmware would be revealed.
