The hottest rumored feature about the iPhone OS 4.0 would be its Multi-tasking feature which will also support third party applications. Currently, the iPhone OS 4.0 does support background processing, but not for third party applications. You can run iPod, calendar and SMS applications in the background which are iPhone OS native apps. Previously, this feature was disabled in the iPhone OS because of two main reasons – Security threat, as running an app in the background might be a potential threat, and the second reason was the possibility of the excessive use of the CPU which could have resulted in a quick drain of battery and slow processing. These two problems seem to be have taken care of in the new firmware. Though background processing and multi-tasking is currently possible too on the jailbroken iPhone but with the release of this firmware, it would be official and safer. There is a possibility that Apple might restrict this app for iPads and expected iPhone 4G because of their more power hardware than the previous models. These devices are capable of carrying out more tasks than the previous versions of iPhone, which was the sole reason behind not allowing multi-tasking on them. Lets wait see what Apple has got in their mind for us!
