Secure Facebook fan pages with SSL Certificates before October 01 2011
Tags: facebok, fan pages, sslThere is a buzz going on that Facebook plans to force all fan pages with to host their content on servers where SSL certificates are installed. Facebook has set a deadline of October 01 2011. According to Facebook:
As the web evolves, expectations around security change. For example, HTTPS — once a technology used primarily on banking and e-commerce sites — is now becoming the norm for any web app that stores user information. We feel that HTTPS is an essential option to protect the security of Facebook accounts, and since Apps on Facebook are an important part of the site, support for HTTPS in your app is critical to ensure user security.
The advantage of this major change in Facebook plan is that every single fan page on Facebook – whether they use free tab apps, custom code – all of them have to be secured with SSL certificates. Bottom line is that we all fan page owers, developers, designers have to secure our fan pages with SSL certificates.
Are you ready to secure your Facebook pages with SSL certificate? Do you know what securing your fan pages means, and how much it will cost you to secure your Facebook fan page with SSL certificate? I will explain all these in more detail:
What is SSL?
SSL is abbreviation of Secure Socket Layer. All the communication between a user browser and hosting server is encrypted.
To secure your Facebook fan page, app, your server needs to have a secure SSL certificate installed. This certificate can be shared as well as single for your domain. Either will work with Facebook fan pages.
For single site SSL certificates, you will need dedicated IP address for your website as well.
SSL Certificate Cost
SSL certificates are typically not part of the hosting plans, therefore you will need to order secure certificate from your host. Dedicated IP addres will cost around $4 per month.
SSL certificates aren’t that cheap. They normally cost about $80 to $100 per year per domain. Godaddy has an offer of $12.99 per year per domain.
What is the affect on fan pages?
If you are a social marketing app developer and got some client fan pages, your options are pretty clear. Your client will need to purchase SSL certificate and get their domain secured. Unless and until you are providing hosting services as part of your contract.
Steps to secure my fan page?
Order a good hosting for your fan page if you haven’t. This is the first thing you need. I can provide hosting for $100 per year as well. Now order dedicated IP and secure SSL certificate for your domain.
If your fan pages have static content (fan gate, images, youtube video etc), I recommend you to contact http://www.facebook.com/fanpagesexpert and get your secure FTP hosting for as low as US$ 2.5 per year.
You will need to change settings under Facebook developer application. In app settings, link your secure fan page URL in Secure Canvas URL and Secure Page Tab URL.
That’s it – your fan pages are now secure!
What Else You’ll Need
So we know that Facebook’s going to require you to secure all your fan pages by October 1, 2011. Your fan page can be secured well ahead of the deadline.
If you have any additional suggestions, hosting or secure certificate links, be sure to leave them in the comments!

Google+ launch was marked with Mark Zuckerberg announcing that soon Facebook would reveal its new features on which the company has been working since long. This set up a buzz in the social media market and this past week Mark Zuckerberg kept up to his word and introduced the feature of live chat in Facebook. Facebook announced that they are integrating Skype into their platform, allowing Facebook users the opportunity to video chat with their friends.
Until now Facebook users have been limited to instant text chat and the move to incorporate Skype takes their game to the next level. Both companies agreed the deal to allow video chat to be integrated into the site which will mean people can have ‘face-to-face’ conversations with just one click of the button.
The video calling is so great and it’s so easy, said Zuckerberg. Your least-technical friend is going to be able to get online with video chat and get connected. You’ll connect with your friends on the social network that already has all your friends.
Zuberberg also inform the audience that Facebook currently has 750 million users and with Skype’s integration with Facebook, figures of Skype’s users of 170 million would also dramatically increase.
This can also be understood as another step for Facebook to solidify it as a central platform for communication and connection across the globe. Facebook, for the recent years has been the biggest and most popular social platform amongst the masses and seems to be determined to keep up to its reputation of remaining at the top of the charts.

After a failed attempt of initiating its own social networking platform (Google Buzz) Google has now once again launched another of its social media tool entitled Google+. It seems that Google has not yet forgotten the bitter memories of its previous letdown and has merely proclaimed Google + as a test trial version or more modestly a testing project.
MC Siegler at Tech Crunch stated:
Google+ is easily already the most compelling social project Google has ever done. The most appealing of the new launch can be listed as:
- Circles — online places users create to socialize and interact with different groups of people, not everyone. They’re private to anyone who isn’t designated to participate. So Jake can share openly with his Tea Party friends without alienating his Clinton-era Democratic parents.
- Hangouts — Hangout will allow users to do video or text chat with anyone willing to do so. It’s multi-person video calling.
- Mobile — Group messaging, location services and photo and video uploads and sharing.
- Sparks — Sparks will allow users to access the content in which they are interested from across the web through Google.
Many people and analysts are of the opinion that Facebook which has over 600 million members now has to face a competitor, although no such statement has been given from Google’s platform.
Alexandra Petri of the Washington Post expressed her views over Google+ as:
Google Plus isn’t the new Facebook. It’s the grown-up Facebook. Perhaps this makes it the anti-Facebook.
Deciding that Google+ will takeover Facebook is quite a pre-mature decision at present as Google has not yet drawn curtains over all features and secrets that in store for its users. Facebook on the other hand has massive number of users and applications, and surpassing them all will be hard nut to crack for Google. Only upcoming time will decide as to which of the titans captures the social media platform in future.

How do women use Social Media?
Tags: Facebook, social media, social sites, women and social media
“The world’s gone social. And women are more social than men.” –Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg.
Nowadays it is an open secret that social media sites are dramatically changing the way we live and conduct our lives online. But the role played by women in it is commonly overlooked. Perhaps surprisingly, women are online and interacting on social sites just as much if not, more than their male counterparts. Hence, it is important to understand how women use social networks and the powerful effects of social media sites on their sites.
It’s no shock that men and women act differently online, just as they do in everyday life .Men use social media forums and sites as means to gather information and increase their status. In contrast to this, women often use online social networking tools to make connections and share items from their personal lives. “We’re women–we like to talk about things. Women use social media as a way to connect,” says Jodi Kahn, the head of iVillage.
Furthermore, men are active blog participant. They are more likely to read, write and post comments to blogs. Surprisingly, both men and women report that their most common blog topic is “my life,” she says. However, the second most popular topic for men is business and career, and food and fashion are tied in second place for women.
A summary of how women use social media can be listed as follows:
- 53% of adult females use social media at least on a weekly basis.
- Their top interests are entertainment, food, health/wellness, and recipes/cooking. Fashion/beauty/shopping comes in fifth.
- 34% of women use social networks to get information.
- 20% of women are looking for advice and recommendations.
The above analysis shows that women are increasing using social media platforms to find answers to their queries, connect to friends and family and play online games. Therefore in the future social media developers must focus on this up-coming trend and develop applications and sites that focus feminine audience.
